AI-Powered Human Rights Abuse Detection and Reporting
In partnership with CRIES, a regional peacebuilding and research organization, we implemented a Generative AI solution to monitor human rights developments across South America. The system tracked over 20 local news portals in Spanish and Portuguese to surface early signals of rights violations and public interest issues. The project was presented at PeaceCon 2024 as a case study in using AI responsibly for advocacy and regional risk monitoring.
Challenge
CRIES and its network of volunteers were spending significant time manually tracking reports of human rights violations across more than 20 local news portals in South America. With limited resources, much of their effort was consumed by information gathering rather than actual follow-up or advocacy. The lack of automation made it difficult to stay current, prioritize emerging cases, or maintain comprehensive coverage - especially across multiple regions and languages.
Solution
We developed a Generative AI-powered automated solution with simple case management and visualization features for CRIES to monitor over 20 local news portals across South America for human rights–related developments. The system ingests and analyzes news articles in Spanish and Portuguese, extracting key entities, dates, and contextual themes. It tags potential human rights violations and generates summaries for review by CRIES analysts. A human-in-the-loop process ensures validation of findings, while the built-in case management interface allows analysts to track, prioritize, and escalate incidents efficiently. Visual dashboards help surface trends and patterns over time, supporting evidence-based reporting and advocacy.
Impact
Expanded Monitoring Capacity Without Scaling Manually
The solution automated the tracking of news from over 20 sources, significantly improving coverage and consistency without increasing volunteer workload.
Freed Up Volunteers for Follow-Up and Advocacy
By reducing the time spent on information gathering, volunteers were able to dedicate more effort to verifying cases, producing reports, and engaging with regional partners.
Recognition at PeaceCon 2024
The project was featured as a leading example of how AI and technology can support civil society efforts to safeguard rights and promote data-driven action at scale.
