An airport ground services team explored an AI-powered approach to improve tracking and handover visibility for live animal (AVI) baggage. The initiative demonstrated how real-time updates, better coordination, and digital logs could enhance compliance with welfare and transit standards.
Challenge
Live animals transported as AVI baggage require careful handling and a documented chain of custody. Manual tracking during handovers between terminals, handlers, and aircraft often resulted in visibility gaps, delayed coordination, and difficulty in meeting regulatory and animal welfare standards.
Solution
We worked with the airport services team to design and validate a solution that uses computer vision and mobile-based tracking to monitor the physical movement of live animal crates throughout the airport. The system captured handover events, tracked location changes, and created a timestamped digital log accessible to operations teams. The solution was integrated into existing airport workflows for real-time monitoring, and demonstrated the potential to reduce miscommunication, improve traceability, and support compliance reporting.
